Power Animals in Shamanism: Meaning, How to Find Yours & Why They Matter
When you connect with your power animal, you always become aware of the energetic support you receive all the time. For example, as we spoke about last week, when you do a home clearing and you are connected with your power animal, you will feel even stronger in their energetic presence and impact.
We will check on some power animals as well so you can familiarize yourself a little bit with how their energy feels, making it easier for you to identify your power animal when they start reaching out. So, make sure to keep on reading; you will learn something new today!
What Is a Power Animal? The Shamanic Definition
A power animal is a guide and protector, deeply connected to you to provide energetic support for your entire life. My power animal was waiting for me in my very first lower-world journey, and I barely knew what was happening! This can happen to you because your power animal will come to you, and you will know it. I can tell you that most of the support I receive when I do shamanic journeying comes from my power animal, plus the support of the spirit of Earth, of course!
In shamanism, power animals serve as spiritual guides that provide protection, as well as deep insight throughout one's life journey. Some of them stay with a person throughout their life, while others appear at certain times depending on the lessons or challenges a person faces.
For example, I mainly work with one power animal, but I work with a second one for specific cases, and it's this second power animal that presents itself; I don't have to search for it. A spirit animal, although profoundly helpful, is not the same. Here is a quick reference for you:
| Power Animal | Spirit Animal |
| Normally, a lifelong relationship | A temporal connection for a specific life goal |
| Guardian and protection, as well as a source of power | More like a regular spirit guide, but with the energy from the animal they represent |
| Protection against negative energies, receiving their 'medicine,' strength, and wisdom. | Yields guidance and support during specific life situations |
| Associated with shamanic traditions, where you connect with the spirit of a wild animal. | Generally, a connection more aligned with "Totem Animal" or even "Familiar." |
It is important to honor the ancestors and the shamanic traditions, and the wisdom and help from power animals have been around since the beginning of time, so it is important not to confuse them with spirit animals, since they have some significant differences.
Power Animals in Shamanic Cosmology: The Lower World
During a shamanic journey, you can venture to three different subplanes: the lower, middle, and upper worlds, and each one will give you different experiences. Today, we will focus on the lower world since this is the "home" of power animals. Here is where you can find and connect with them.
The lower world shamanism plane is like the most vast rainforest you can imagine. There are a lot of green, massive leaves, and you can even feel the energy as very down-to-earth and like, really that feeling of being "in the middle of nowhere." "As you explore, you can also find other landscapes, as at first, I wasn't aware, but after hundreds of journeys, I discovered Vivis is also desert-like, has forests, and has plenty of water bodies like rivers, lakes, and more.
The lower world is a world of unity and of the transcendence of separation, as well as a plane of the unconscious and profound life experiences affecting you today. Here, you encounter the spirits of Earth (called Oversouls). This represents all the species and consciousness of Gaia herself. Wondering if you have one? Keep on reading!
Who Has a Power Animal?
You, too, might have a power animal, especially if you have felt one around. You don't have to be a shaman or spiritual practitioner to have one. Did you know that feeling the calling is what matters the most? Even if you didn't feel the call, but you feel the need to meet your power animal, it is because yours is trying to reach out.
You can tell it is a similar thing to a spirit guide or guardian angel; you too deserve and have this type of protection and support. Also, you can have more than one, as this depends on your soul agreements and life goals. Oh, and one more thing! Did you know that you already have one power animal since birth?
What Kind of Animals Can Be Power Animals?
Did you know that even a small spider can be a powerful power animal? If you thought that only large mammals could be power animals, think again. Power animals do not have to be mammals or birds; they can be reptiles, insects, or sea creatures; any living creature can serve as a power animal. Even some mythological animals or their archetypes can also appear as a power animal. Furthermore, plants and trees can serve as plant spirit guides as well, but don't confuse this with consuming master plants.
Domesticated animals are generally not considered power animals because they are already in the company or service of human beings. These, however, can turn into spirit animals or even familiars. As significant power animal characteristics, it is more likely to have a wild, untamed animal that supports and accompanies you.
You can name many: raven, wolf, jaguar, spider, frog, snake, eagle, bear... although rare, a dragon or unicorn as well. They also can differ in size, where a wolf is three or four times its size, or a larger animal like a bear is small. These do have specific reasons and are unique to each animal and person. Stay with me to know what power animals can do!
What Does a Power Animal Do? Roles & Gifts
A power animal’s main role is to bring protection, power, guidance, and medicine into your life. When you are connected with your power animal, you not only feel spiritually accompanied, but you feel stronger, clearer, and a lot more supported at an energetic level.
As a protector, your power animal helps guard you and walk with you through difficult energies. This is especially important in shamanic work. For example, when a practitioner is clearing heavy energies, removing entities, or assisting in an intense healing process, protection is essential, and a power animal is of tremendous help.
Your power animal is also a teacher and guide. In many ways, your power animal is your principal teacher, and you are the apprentice. The more deeply you step into shamanic work, the more you understand that part of the learning is getting out of your own way and allowing your power animal to lead.
A power animal is also a source of power and healing. Reconnecting with one can restore vitality, bring peace where there was chaos, and help a person come back into order. I have seen how this kind of reconnection changes everything, because when spiritual power returns, life starts moving differently.
Power animals are also messengers. They communicate through dreams, signs in nature, repeated sightings, and journeying. And yes, they can also help with specific challenges, such as healing a difficult relationship, receiving guidance, moving through a demanding goal, or even finding something that was lost. Next come the signs you have been looking for, so keep on reading!
Signs Your Power Animal Is Reaching Out
- The same animal keeps appearing in your waking life. You may have noticed it crossing your path, appearing in media, on signs, or in conversation. If an animal keeps appearing, pay attention.
- Your attention keeps getting drawn to one animal. You flip channels and see an elk, then hear someone mention it, then see it again somewhere else. This is one of the ways the spirit gets your attention.
- The animal appears vividly or repeatedly in dreams. If the same animal keeps returning in dreams with a strong presence, there is usually a reason.
- You have always felt deeply drawn to a certain animal. Sometimes the connection has been there your whole life, even before you had language for it.
- The animal behaves unusually around you. It may come close, remain unafraid, or hold eye contact in a way that feels very direct.
- You feel its presence during meditation, journeying, or in moments of crisis. Sometimes support arrives exactly when you need it most.
Trust your intuition, this is always key! Your power animal may not always come dramatically, but when the connection is real, you will feel there is something more. True as per the indigenous power animal traditions and natural flow of events. Even without signs, if you keep on reading, you will learn how to find yours.
How to Find Your Power Animal: The Shamanic Journey
If you feel called to meet your power animal, you are ready. Shamanism is a path of direct revelation, and the shamanic journey to find a power animal connection is one of the clearest ways to meet this spirit helper for yourself.
Begin by setting a clear intention. You are journeying to the Lower World in non-ordinary reality, not imagining a symbol. With the sound of the drum, you enter through an opening into the earth, perhaps a cave, a burrow, or a hollow tree stump, and you begin descending.
As you move into the Lower World, everything feels alive. You may hear the drum differently, feel the density of the air, notice roots, earth, water, forests, or wide natural landscapes opening before you. The experience is real, and once you have truly journeyed, you understand this is not a metaphor. This surprised me too, and still today, I can tell how amazing this is each time I journey and experience it.
Ask to be shown your power animal. Very often, it will show itself three times. Perhaps you see a claw first, then a wing, then an eye. Once it has appeared three times, it usually appears a fourth time, in full body present. You can ask if it is your power animal, and from here, everything will go forward.
If this does not come easily at first, you can also ask for dreams, watch for synchronistic sightings, or work with a shamanic practitioner who can help you connect more clearly. I will be very happy to help you with a Soul Retrieval session intended to find your power animal.
Soul Retrieval Ceremony: Start to feel whole again!
I will record everything I see, and if we journey together, you might even have seen something similar as I did, making it even cooler. Trust me, this happens more than it doesn't!
Power Animal Retrieval
When someone feels disempowered, stuck, ill, depressed, or as if their life has lost momentum, power animal retrieval can be a profound healing. Sometimes a power animal has left, and no new one has yet come to take its place.
Here, I shift my consciousness, journeying into the Lower World, and search for the power animal that is ready to come to you. When the animal comes, I return and normally work on a reintegration session, generally visiting the Upper World.
In your end, this can feel deeply emotional, grounding, powerful, or immediately strengthening. So, check above if you would like to receive a power animal retrieval. You can visit my service page and see if this healing calls you. Stick with me, I am sharing a bit more!
How to Honor and Build a Relationship with Your Power Animal
Once your power animal comes, the relationship begins. Like any true spiritual bond, it deepens through reciprocity, respect, and devotion.
You can honor your power animal by saying thank you, placing an object that represents it where you can see it daily, studying its natural behavior, journeying to meet it regularly, or even moving and dancing like it. Over time, you learn how it communicates, how it reacts, and what it is trying to teach you. It's like a relationship; it builds over time.
Keep asking your power animal what to do next. Watch carefully, remember what you receive, and follow through. This relationship grows the same way any real relationship grows, with time, consistency, and reverence.

Power Animals Across Indigenous Traditions
Power animals are present across many traditions, but it is important to approach this with respect and not flatten different cultures into one idea.
In some Native American traditions, spirit contact can be part of vision quests and other sacred rites.
In Siberian shamanism, relationships with helping spirits and animal spirits are deeply rooted and central to practice.
It is also important to remember that the term power animal comes from Core Shamanism, especially through Michael Harner (bio). Many Indigenous peoples use their own words within their own traditions. Across cultures and continents, the relationship between human beings and animal spirits is ancient, sacred, and universal.
FAQ
Q: What is the difference between a power animal and a spirit animal?
A: A big difference between a spirit animal and a power animal is that while the former supports you more like a teacher or messenger, with a potential temporary one-time message, the power animal is a lot more specific, providing "energy medicine" as well as protection, generally, during shamanic journeying.
Q: Can I have more than one power animal?
A: You can absolutely have more than one power animal at a time and throughout your life. As you evolve, so does your spirit team, including your power animal. You may experience moments in your life, or even shamanic journeys, where you need guidance and support from more than one. A lot of times, a power animal plays a very specific role, generally a cornerstone in your life.
Q: What does it mean if my power animal leaves?
A: If your power animal has left, you have ended a phase or cycle in your life. You've overcome something or have stepped above a specific situation, and from here, you no longer need the guidance of that specific power animal, generally yielding a new power animal to connect with you.
Q: Can a domesticated animal be a power animal?
A: A domesticated animal may be a familiar or companion, but sometimes, it is possible that they also turn to play a role as an energetic protector through the power of connection, or even, if they have the capability and it's aligned, act also as your power animal while, for example, you journey the shamanic subplanes.
Q: Do power animals choose you, or do you choose them?
A: You will find out that power animals always choose you in the shamanic tradition. You simply set the intention that you want to search for yours, and they may present it or not. They also may sporadically show to you as you journey, in meditation, or even in physical sightings.
Q: What happens during a power animal retrieval?
A: When I work with someone for a power animal retrieval, we both explore the lower elemental world together with the intention of finding and connecting with the power animal of this person. As we journey, if they present themselves, either one of us, or both, will see them appearing peculiarly.
Q: How do I know if an animal appearing to me is my power animal?
A: You will first know it's your power animal because you never felt the necessity of "chasing" that specific animal that presented to you. You might even meet your power animal and know there is a special connection, even if you have zero awareness about the subject. You will feel a deep connection, similar to what you could feel to an animal close to you.
Q: Can insects or reptiles be power animals?
A: Absolutely, and some insects, like spiders, provide great wisdom. Each power animal brings many symbologies, traits, and reasons to be connected with you at that specific time. Reptiles also can be powerful guides with very precise messages yielding to transformation.
Q: What if I don't resonate with the power animal I received?
A: If you don't resonate with your power animal, it will be great to find out why. You can do this yourself and observe your connection with this animal from multiple perspectives. Open your heart chakra to receive insight into why, indeed, this specific power animal presented itself to you, and ultimately, you will understand the deep resonance between you and your power animal.
Q: Do I need to be a shaman to work with a power animal?
A: No, you don't! With practice and intention, you will be able to work with your power animal on various goals. While you might not "see" them, they "see" / perceive you the same way you can perceive them if you open up to receive.
Conclusion
In the end, you felt your power animal, and this means that the time to meet is coming close. It could be that you are about to meet your power animal, so get ready, because a wonderful connection is already starting; you only need to follow through and allow it to happen.
