Principle of Vibration: The Third Hermetic Law Explained

The Principle of Vibration is the third of the seven Hermetic principles: nothing rests, everything moves, and everything vibrates at its own rate.
The next time you walk into a room and feel its mood before anyone says a word, pay attention to that feeling. It is this principle in everyday clothes, and it is the reason the teaching still speaks to people.
In this guide I explain what the principle actually says, where it comes from, what science does and does not support, and six simple practices for working with your own energy. It is the third law in the series that begins on the 7 laws of the universe, so if you are new to the Hermetic principles, that page gives you the full map.
What Is the Hermetic Principle of Vibration?
The Hermetic Principle of Vibration says that nothing in the universe is at rest. Everything, from matter and energy to thoughts, emotions and Spirit, is in motion, and what separates one thing from another is its rate and mode of vibration.
The Kybalion, the book that popularized the seven Hermetic principles, compresses the idea into one line: “Nothing rests; everything moves; everything vibrates.” Two words in that teaching do most of the work.
- Rate is how fast something vibrates, the way a low note and a high note differ in speed.
- Mode is the kind or pattern of vibration, the way a violin and a drum can play the same note and still sound nothing alike.
A rock, a radio wave, a piece of music and a mood all differ in rate and mode. The Hermetic view is that this single idea can describe the whole range of existence, from dense matter at one end to pure Spirit at the other.
Here is why it matters spiritually. If your thoughts and feelings are also vibrations, then they are not fixed facts about who you are. They are states, and states can change. The rest of this guide is about how.
Where Does the Principle of Vibration Come From?
The seven-principle list that includes Vibration comes from The Kybalion, a book published in 1908 under the name “Three Initiates” and presented as a summary of the teachings of Hermes Trismegistus, the legendary sage of the Hermetic tradition.
I want to be straight with you about the history, because many articles blur it. The older Hermetic writings, such as the Corpus Hermeticum, are Greek-language texts from the early centuries of the common era, and they speak of God, the divine Mind and the soul’s ascent. They do not set out a tidy list of seven principles. That list is the Kybalion’s own arrangement, and many scholars regard the book as an early twentieth-century work shaped by the New Thought movement rather than a translation of an ancient manual.
Does that make the principle worthless? Not to me. I teach the seven principles as a spiritual framework, a practical way of looking at how energy, mind and experience relate, not as a documented historical lineage. Judge them by whether they help you see your life more clearly. That is the test I use in my own energy work.
If you want to see where Vibration sits in the sequence, the first principle is the Principle of Mentalism and the second is the Principle of Correspondence. Vibration builds directly on both.
What Does Science Say About “Everything Vibrates”?
Physics agrees that nothing is perfectly still: the atoms in all matter are in constant motion, and light, sound and radio are all waves with measurable frequencies. Where the Hermetic teaching goes further than physics is in claiming that thoughts and emotions vibrate in a way that shapes your circumstances.
Here is what the physical side looks like in plain terms.
- Heat is motion. A cold object and a hot object are both made of moving particles. The difference is how energetically they move. The Kybalion makes this same point.
- Sound is vibration you can hear. Young, healthy ears pick up a range of frequencies. Dogs hear higher than we do, which is why a dog whistle seems silent to us.
- Light is vibration you can see. The colors we see are a narrow slice of a much wider electromagnetic spectrum. Radio waves and X-rays are the same kind of thing at very different frequencies.
That is real, well-established science, and it is a lovely support for the first half of the principle. The Hermetic claim that the differences between things come down to rate and mode of vibration is a poetic but recognizable description of how physics treats waves and energy.
Where the principle and physics part ways
Two honest caveats. First, the Kybalion relies on the idea of an “Ether,” an invisible medium carrying light and electricity. Physics later dropped that idea, so the book’s scientific passages read as a snapshot of the science available when it was written, not a current textbook.
Second, no instrument has shown that a feeling of gratitude or fear broadcasts a frequency that rearranges the events of your life. Brain activity does produce measurable electrical rhythms, but that is a different claim from “my emotional vibration attracts outcomes.” When I talk about emotional vibration, I am describing a lived, felt experience and a spiritual framework. I am not describing a number on a meter, and I would be wary of anyone who says otherwise.
How Do Different Rates of Vibration Create Matter, Mind and Spirit?
In the Hermetic model, matter, energy, mind and Spirit are not separate substances. They are different rates of the same underlying movement, arranged on a scale with Spirit at one end and the densest matter at the other.
The Kybalion explains this with a spinning wheel, and it is still the clearest picture I know. Imagine a wheel turning slowly. You can see it, but you hear nothing. Speed it up and a low growl appears, then a rising note, then higher notes, until the sound climbs beyond what your ears can register and the wheel falls silent. Keep going and you would feel heat, then see a dull red glow that brightens through orange, yellow, green, blue and violet, until even the color disappears from view. Nothing has been added to the wheel. Only its rate changed, and every change brought a completely different manifestation.
The Hermetic teaching takes that one step further. If rate alone can turn a silent object into sound, heat and light, then the same logic might stretch past the physical into mental states and finally into Spirit. The Kybalion describes Spirit as vibrating at such an intense rate that it is practically at rest, just as a fast wheel seems motionless, while the densest matter sits at the opposite pole.
“Higher” does not mean “better”
This is the part people miss. High and low are positions on a scale, not a moral ranking. A dense, slow emotion like grief is not a failure on your part. It is simply one point on the dial, and the dial can move. If this idea of opposite ends of one scale interests you, the Principle of Polarity goes into it in depth.
Do Thoughts and Emotions Have a Vibration?
In the Hermetic teaching, yes: every thought, emotion and mental state has its own rate and mode of vibration, and you can shift from one to another through the direction of your attention.
The Kybalion states it directly: “Every thought, emotion or mental state has its corresponding rate and mode of vibration.” It adds that a mental state can be reproduced on purpose, the way a musical tone can be reproduced by making an instrument vibrate at a certain rate. The practical hinge of the whole teaching is a short sentence from the same book: “Will directs the Attention, and Attention changes the Vibration.”
You do not need to believe a single metaphysical claim to test this. Think of a moment of real gratitude, then think of a moment of dread. Your breathing, your posture and the feeling in your chest are different, and you did not change anything outside yourself. You changed where your attention was resting. That felt shift is what I mean by a change in vibration.
I put the same idea this way when I teach it: your vibration is your proclamation to the Universe, so make it match what you actually want. That is a statement about direction and intention, not a promise about outcomes. It connects closely to the Principle of Mentalism, which says that thought is where your experience begins.
Is the Principle of Vibration the Same as the Law of Attraction?
No. The Principle of Vibration is the broader teaching that everything moves and that mental states have a rate and mode. The Law of Attraction is one popular application of it, the idea that like attracts like.
The attraction teaching works through resonance. A good physical picture is the tuning fork: strike one, and a second fork of the same pitch nearby begins to sound on its own, while forks of other pitches stay quiet. Matching responds to matching. Notice what resonance does not do. It does not pull objects together or hand anyone a result. It makes a matching response more likely.
That is how I understand it for people. When you are steady in a calm, open state, you tend to notice and respond to the opportunities, people and ideas that fit that state. When you are running on fear, you tend to notice the threats. The world has not changed, but what you tune into has.

I will not tell you that a good mood guarantees a particular outcome, because nobody can promise that. What I can say is that your inner state shapes how you meet whatever arrives. To go further into the attraction side, read my guide to the Law of Attraction.
How Do You Raise Your Vibration? Six Practices
You raise your vibration by deliberately moving your attention and your body toward a steadier, more open state, and the six practices below are the ones I return to most. None of them requires equipment or experience.
One note first: these are spiritual and self-care practices. They are not a treatment for any condition, and if you are struggling with your mental health, please talk to a qualified professional alongside any spiritual work.
1. Start with the breath
Breath is the quickest dial you have. Sit comfortably, breathe in through your nose for a count of four, and breathe out slowly for a count of six. Repeat for three to five minutes and notice what loosens. Many people find a longer exhale helps them settle.
2. Sit in a short heart-centered meditation
Rest your attention on the center of your chest and let your breath move there. If your mind wanders, bring it back without scolding yourself. Ten minutes is plenty. If you prefer to be guided, my guided meditations are recorded for exactly this kind of settling.
3. Practice specific gratitude
Write down three specific things you are grateful for, and be precise. “The way the light came through the kitchen window this morning” works far better than “my home.” Then spend a few seconds actually feeling each one in your body. In energy work I would say you are opening the heart center, and the feeling is the point, not the list.
4. Use sound
Sound is vibration you can feel directly. Hum on a long exhale, sing along to music you love, chant, or listen to a singing bowl and notice where in your body it lands. Here the principle stops being an idea and becomes something you can sense.
5. Name the feeling, then redirect your attention
When doubt or fear shows up, name it silently: “This is fear.” Observe it without judgment, like a wave rising and passing. Then ask what you would like to put your attention on instead. This is the Kybalion’s “Will directs the Attention” in action. You are not suppressing the feeling. You are choosing what you feed next.
6. Do one kind thing
Any loving action, from a message to a friend to holding a door, moves your energy outward and out of your own head. It is simple, and it works because kindness shifts your attention away from what is wrong and toward what is possible.
Consistency matters more than intensity. Five honest minutes a day will teach you more about this principle than an occasional two-hour retreat.
How Does Vibration Connect to the Other Hermetic Principles?
The seven principles are designed to be read together, and Vibration is the one that links the abstract ideas at the start of the series to the practical ones that follow.
| Principle | How it connects to vibration |
|---|---|
| Mentalism | Thought is where vibration starts. Change the thought and you change the state. |
| Correspondence | “As above, so below”: the same patterns of vibration appear in the physical, mental and spiritual planes. |
| Polarity | High and low vibration are two ends of one scale, so you can move along it. |
| Rhythm | Vibration has ups and downs by nature. Low days are part of the swing, not a verdict on you. |
| Cause and Effect | Your state is a cause. What you do from that state produces effects. |
| Gender | Receptive and active energies both carry vibration, and balance between them steadies it. |
For the whole sequence in one place, with a short explanation of each law, start at the 7 laws of the universe.
Common Misunderstandings About Vibration
Because “vibes” has become everyday language, the teaching often gets flattened. These are the four distortions I see most.
- “Low vibration means you are a bad person.” It does not. Low and high describe states on a scale, and everyone moves through both.
- “You must stay positive all the time.” Forcing a smile over real pain is avoidance, not elevation. Accept the feeling, release it with awareness, and let the energy move. Grief and anger are signals to be heard, not enemies to be banished.
- “Science has proven that your emotions attract events.” Science confirms that matter and energy vibrate. It has not shown that feelings steer outside events. Hold that part as a spiritual teaching.
- “A good vibration guarantees results.” It improves how you meet life. It does not control other people or promise outcomes.
FAQs About the Principle of Vibration
Q: What is the Hermetic principle of vibration?
It is the third of the seven Hermetic principles, and it states that nothing rests, everything moves and everything vibrates. The differences between matter, energy, mind and Spirit come from their varying rates and modes of vibration.
Q: What are the 7 principles of Hermeticism?
In the Kybalion they are Mentalism, Correspondence, Vibration, Polarity, Rhythm, Cause and Effect, and Gender. I explain each one on the 7 laws of the universe page.
Q: Do Hermetics believe in God?
It depends on the tradition. The Kybalion speaks of THE ALL, which it describes as Mind and Spirit, and many readers understand that as God or as the source of everything. The older Hermetic texts speak more directly of God and divine Mind. Hermeticism has never required one fixed belief, which is why people from many faiths study it.
Q: Is The Kybalion actually Hermetic?
It draws on Hermetic themes and uses Hermes’ name, but it was published in 1908, and its list of seven principles is its own arrangement rather than a quotation from ancient Hermetic scripture. I treat it as a useful modern framework inspired by Hermetic ideas.
Q: Can I measure my vibration?
No. Frequency is a physical measurement, but a “high vibration” in the spiritual sense is a felt state, not a reading. Be cautious of devices or products that claim to measure it. The best gauge is simple: how steady, open and clear you feel.

Final Thoughts
The Principle of Vibration asks you to take one simple fact seriously: you are always in motion, inside and out, so you are never stuck in the way you think you are. The physics supports the movement. The spiritual teaching invites you to use it, and your own breath, attention and kindness are the instruments.
Start small. Choose one practice from the six above and try it for a week. Then notice what changes in how you meet your days.
