Picture the situation: there is a black mirror awaiting on the table next to a soft candle flame in a very quiet space. You notice the water inside a golden bowl becomes still. Perhaps, if you have heard about scrying, this is the situation you imagine. Maybe you saw it in fantasy, games, or perhaps Wiccan or other magic exploration.

It's been a while already (since 2012) that I have been dedicating my life path to being a psychic medium, so using divination tools is my day-to-day. So, the first thing I want to share is that there is no drama here, and definitely no fear, because these tools connect with the light when you set that intention.

What Is Scrying?

Scrying is a form of divination that focuses on reflective and normally translucent surfaces. Normally, this is done with a crystal ball, a bowl with water, or a scrying mirror. These help you to focus the mind and receive wisdom and symbolic imagery that will guide you.

Do you ask yourself what "scrying" or "searching" means? Here, you basically lock your eyes on an easy-to-gaze-at spot that will slow down the analytical mind. Maybe you will notice colors or sounds, sometimes like a mist blended with images or even faces. You will still see this within your mind, not on the actual surface (it's not a tablet!).

To give some context, the word "scry" is related to "descry," which basically means to make something difficult to see. In scrying divination, the surface becomes a focus for your psychic senses and may help you connect with your higher self, Spirit Guides, or natural clairvoyance.

Always make sure to use what you receive for reflection and receiving insight. Also remember that free will continues to shape your future, and your physical actions count.

A Brief History of Scrying

Among many cultures, they have used reflective metal or polished stone. Others used water or glass, as well as candlelight for divination. It would be hard to find a starting point since it's difficult to prove for some cultures out there. However, it is true that reflective surfaces became sacred tools for many traditions for prophecy or even mediumship/channeling.

As a good piece of data, obsidian mirrors were made in pre-Columbian Mexico. There is this famous example later belonging to the English scholar and court adviser John Dee. Checking the records, it says that he described angelic conferences held with mediums, especially Edward Kelley. By doing some research, I found a published archaeological study of Dee's obsidian mirror that connects the stone to Pachuca, Mexico.

Also, there are later traditions that associate Nostradamus with a water-filled bowl or something in that nature, but there is no real evidence for this, or I didn't find it! Now, scrying appears in spiritualism and modern witchcraft as well as Wicca. Also, many people today use it as a helpful tool to develop psychic abilities and start connecting more.

The 6 Main Methods of Scrying

1. Mirror Scrying, Including Black Mirrors

A scrying mirror gives your vision a dark field with little detail, and this can make it more difficult, especially to start with. Make sure to find polished obsidian or clear glass painted with matte black on the back. It should be at eye level in a quiet and dim room. If you use candlelight, make sure it doesn't reflect on the surface of your mirror.

You must look slightly beyond the surface and simply gaze by relaxing your eyes. You might see some blur; this is okay, especially if you start seeing colors appear. At first, this could be visual adaptation, but down the line, you will start feeling more like an inner response.

Fernando's tip: Give yourself ten quiet minutes. Trust me, forcing a vision usually closes the door.

Use a purpose-made black mirror, polished obsidian, or clear glass painted matte black on the back. Place it at eye level in a dim room, with any candle safely positioned away from its reflection.

Look slightly beyond the surface and soften your gaze. Your face may blur, or clouds and colors may appear. Normal visual adaptation can cause some movement, so wait for an impression that carries meaning or a clear inner response that you can start using.

Scrying tools can remain simple: a dark mirror, a still bowl of water, and a clear sphere in focused candlelight.

2. Water Scrying

I like water scrying because of how simple it is, plus being very beginner-friendly. Just fill a dark bowl with clear water and let it sit on a stable table. Make sure to use a soft light, watch the surface, and let go. Don't expect like a movie to begin; it goes beyond that.

You may notice signs or lose images in your third eye, as well as possibly start to know something, as if you started to know the answers all of a sudden.

Water scrying is simple and very beginner-friendly. Fill a dark bowl with clean water, set it on a stable table, and use soft light or one candle placed safely to the side. Watch the surface without expecting a little movie to begin.

Fernando's tip: Wait for the water to settle and breathe gently. Just allow the stillness to show you how much there is for you to know.

Make sure to journal everything you experienced, especially your emotions and even some physical sensations... all count here!

3. Crystal Ball Scrying

Crystal ball scrying simply uses a crystal sphere, such as one made of quartz, which is the traditional one. There are also smoky quartz, amethyst, and obsidian. If you check my videos, sometimes you may see a black obsidian crystal ball right behind me!

Fernando's tip: Crystal bowls have a history of being a main tool of psychics. It is true that for training mental focus, it can be a great ally, so never hesitate to bring one into your life if you feel the call... It's nothing weird!

For this one, you have to look toward its center... as it has a focus point in the very core of the sphere. Once again, it is all about using a point to focus. For many people, it gives the mind somewhere to rest, and this can be very useful when learning how to quiet the mind. Explore crystals if you feel drawn to a natural stone sphere.

4. Obsidian Scrying

Obsidian is volcanic glass, so thanks to its dark reflective surface, it makes it a beautiful scrying tool. You can connect with it with grounding, truth, and always great intentions. Your own experiences always matter. You may use a mirror or a crystal ball here... even a polished slab will work.

Fernando's tip: First make sure to clean the surface appropriately and from here, you must then clear its energy through moonlight as well as sending it positive energy These are sentient beings too, and they need proper care.

5. Candle Flame Scrying

Flame scrying is quite interesting in how you can see shadows and other visions. Let your eyes rest near a candle flame. You only need to observe the flame and notice what imagery you receive in your peripheral vision, as well as your mind's eye. Make sure to first know the regular behavior of the flame in that specific room so you can discard it.

Fernando's tip: Please, make sure to keep the candle on a heat-safe surface and away from curtains and pets... A rule of thumb is to never leave a flame unattented. If this strains your eyes, you can close them and focus inward.

6. Bowl Scrying with Water, Ink, or Oil

Bowl scrying is more about using a vessel with a liquid, sometimes dark, such as oil, although plain water is enough. Make sure to use non-toxic materials if you go for the ink, and protect the surface as well as keep it away from flame. You only need to rest your hands beside the bowl and gaze in.

Fernando's tip: The bowl's material matters less than stability and the relationship you build with it. A simple ceramic bowl can become meaningful through regular practice. An expensive object doesn't mean it is necessarily better.

How to Scry: A Step-by-Step Practice for Beginners

Begin with water or perhaps a black mirror. It matters that you make sure that whichever surface you choose lets you relax. A steady meditation practice helps because scrying also asks for presence and patience, and with it, your mind will also quiet with much more ease.

  1. Prepare your space. Always dim the light and shut down notifications. The room must feel cool, comfortable, and, of course, in silence.
  2. Ground yourself. Make sure to sit comfortably, and take three to five deep breaths, letting go for each exhale a little more. You can imagine roots connecting you with the Earth.
  3. Set one intention. Ask a clear question, such as, “What do I need to understand about this situation?” Make sure it is an open-ended question, and don't expect a specific answer.
  4. Strengthen your energy. Focus on how your aura feels, and ensure it is fully yours. You can welcome all the love and guidance that serves your highest purpose. From here, you will let go of all that doesn't belong to you right now. For extra protection, my free guide can help you protect your energy.
  5. Use the soft gaze. Make sure to simply gaze into the surface without focusing on it. You don't have to dry your eyes, so make sure to blink whenever you need to.
  6. Wait without pushing. I recommend that you invest a good, solid ten minutes and allow it to simply be. You want to notice everything that calls your attention, even if subtle. Furthermore, if you complete the session, you succeeded in it, even if you didn't see anything. This doesn't mean you failed; it means you will see it soon, and you are walking that way.
  7. Journal immediately. Make sure to record the observation before the interpretation because otherwise, you will risk forgetting a lot of detail. This is where the infamous "psychic amnesia" comes into play... after all, these don't go through your logical brain. Write first something like “I saw a blue circle,” then add what it felt like. This helps you recognize personal patterns.
  8. Close the session. Thank your higher self and any guidance you welcomed. You also want to state that the practice is complete and put away the tool. You can do something grounding, like drinking water, and then continue with your life.

From here, I suggest you practice two or three times for a week or two before judging your abilities. Clairvoyance and other abilities will grow stronger as you practice. So, please, don't pressure yourself to want immediate proof, because this will only make it harder.

Is Scrying Safe?

Scrying is generally a gentle spiritual practice when you do it with focus and respect, always aligned with the right intention. A scrying mirror is an object and a visual focus. Care for it respectfully without approaching it with fear because it is simply that... a visionary tool. By itself, it cannot open portals or alter the energy in any negative way.

Always start from a safe and stable spot. Avoid scrying when intoxicated or if you are severely sleep-deprived and without energy. You should also avoid scrying if you are panicking or emotionally overwhelmed. The reason is that your distress can alter your perception and give you wrong results. Furthermore, always keep early sessions short and stop whenever you want.

Use protection by claiming ownership and your free will. Your energy belongs to you, and you want to evoke this in the name of the unbreakable universal law of free will. Here, you can raise the vibrations of your aura, welcome only loving and trustworthy guidance, and release what is outside your path. This is true and a must-follow for all psychic abilities.

Keep your discernment and rightness. Please, don't attempt scrying to invade another person's life or to diagnose illnesses. Also remember that you are not getting guaranteed predictions; you need to interpret them and take action. If you feel fear when scrying, make sure to stop and reach out to someone who can help you, such as myself. Contact me, and we'll chat!

Do not use scrying to invade another person's privacy, diagnose illness, or treat every image as a guaranteed prediction. If visions continue outside your chosen sessions, cause fear, or interfere with daily life, pause and speak with a qualified health professional.

How to Interpret What You See

This one should be natural to you, allowing these visions to come to the mind's eye. You might see a rapid image, like a flash passing by. Sometimes, you notice something like a mist or even a familiar face or spot. Sometimes, you will know things completely out of the blue.

Sometimes, colors can provide clues; for example, white or silver may feel like spiritual guidance with clarity. If you notice blue colors, this could talk of truth or protection. Other times, you may see green, and this symbolizes healing and restoration. There are situations when you will see red or orange, and this always talks about great passion and urgency, and sometimes, it can come as a warning. In rare cases, you may see golden, and this is divine wisdom.

In the end, it matters that you understand this is the beginning. Your own relationship with spiritual colors and their meanings matters more than a rigid dictionary. From here, you have to write down the first impressions and study them from here by checking the context, your emotional patterns, and most especially, your real-life events. It is important to have good discernment to ensure you are grounded and properly aligned in your life.

FAQs About Scrying

Q: What is scrying?

A: Scrying is a divination practice that uses a reflective surface such as a mirror or a bowl with water. These help to focus the logical mind and expand spiritual awareness; for this reason, crystal balls or even a candle flame will be great assets.

Q: How do you scry as a beginner?

A: My advice here is that you begin with a dark bowl of still water in a place that is quiet and still. From here, you must ground yourself and take a couple of deep breaths while you set a clear intention. You may gaze for 10 or 15 minutes while you make sure you record any impression once finished.

Q: Are scrying mirrors dangerous?

A: A divination tool is never dangerous, especially if you don't attempt to connect with negativity. You only need to define the guidance you welcome, set intentions to receive only what you need, and wrap up by closing the session clearly.

Q: What is a scrying mirror used for?

A: Scrying mirrors are good for having a dark visual focus to promote intuitive or symbolic guidance. By shutting down the analytic mind, you will start seeing more colors, perceiving places or people, and starting to know the energy from an intuitive perspective.

Q: How do I make a scrying mirror?

A: Secure clean glass in a picture frame, and make sure to coat the black with thin layers of dark paint. Make sure to handle glass with care. Make sure to reassemble with the painted side facing away from you.

Q: How long does it take to see visions while scrying?

A: It depends, and here, focusing on "when" will only halt you. You may already receive guidance during the first session, or after several weeks; it doesn't matter. Make sure to spend no more than ten or fifteen minutes, especially at first.

Q: What is the difference between scrying and crystal ball reading?

A: Both are different methods that can help you reach the same goal because each method helps ordinary visual focus soften, and this helps a lot to promote intuition and vision. Like the classic coffee mug reader from ages ago!

Let the Image Come in Its Own Time

So, scrying requires patience and respect, and you are willing to sit down quietly without expecting a show. I would suggest you try scrying for about ten minutes a day, and after 30 days, you want to put your notes together. The silence here will be a fantastic blessing.

As a solid piece of advice, I invite you to explore clairvoyance as well as my guide to choosing divination tools if you want to continue. For personal clarity, you can also book a psychic reading with me.
