The Complete List of Divination Tools
There are many types of divination tools, but some are especially useful for people exploring spiritual guidance.
1. Runes: Ancient Symbols of Guidance
I am sure you have heard about the runes, perhaps from movies; hopefully, you have read about them in this blog. They generally come in a set of 24 symbols, each one representing sounds or concepts through abstract symbols. Not so popular among spiritual divination tools, but they are powerful if you connect.
I came to the conclusion that, as with the tarot, it is ideal not to learn the exact meanings of the symbols but to open up to receive unique guidance each time you cast them. You will find a deep understanding when you cast the runes to help you find answers.
You can also use the runes for evocation, casting crystal grids, or regular energy grids (you can find different types of runes, such as quartz, hematite, bones, wood, etc.). It is possible to promote materialization, as well as other types of evocation, through rituals and ceremonies of the occult.
Runes are sets of symbols that have been used for guidance and reflection. A common rune set contains 24 symbols, with each one carrying its own meaning and energy.
Rune reading is not only about memorizing meanings. You can also look at the symbol, notice your first reaction, and allow your intuition to guide your interpretation. If you want to explore this practice further, take a look at the guide to Runes and Spiritual Tools. It can help you understand how these symbols can become part of your spiritual practice.
2. Pendulums and Dowsing Rods
Another popular type of divination tool. You have heard for sure about the pendulum as a popular one among divination tools, and perhaps you have heard about the dowsing rod. And yes, they actually work! The pendulum is fantastic for receiving quick answers from your Spirit Guides if you cannot connect directly. The pendulum is very sensitive to energy changes, and with a good pulse and the right precision, you will manage to receive answers.
Many healers work on the chakras, and they use pendulums to read each chakra's energy and observe how the pendulum reacts. This means that pendulums can help healers find a better way to direct the channeled energy light. Pendulums are among the simplest divination tools to start with. They are often used for yes or no questions and can also be used in spiritual practices involving energy and chakras.Â
A pendulum can be especially interesting when exploring chakra energy. Some spiritual practitioners use its movement as a way to reflect on areas that may need attention. If energy work interests you, you may enjoy learning more through Usui Reiki.
3. Spirit Boards and Ouija
I bet you were waiting for this one, weren't you? Let me ask, have you tampered with one of these when you were a kid or a teenager? For some reason, this divination tool entered the general population as a toy thanks to Hasbro. I condemn this action, so I won't link it, but you can look it up!
Ouija boards are one of the most important divination tools in physical mediumship and for séance sessions. Perhaps the most serious among the types of divination tools, because they do work. Take it as letting a 12-year-old play in an automatic car with the engine on! This is why there are so many horror stories about them.
In a proper séance session, the medium, plus all other people sitting in the circle (acting as energetic batteries), will focus their intention on enabling the Spirit to communicate. In my personal experience, I have witnessed table movements and other more profound phenomena.Â
Spirit boards are powerful divination tools, associated with séances and communication with spirits. This is not something to approach as a simple game.Â
If you want to understand the subject in more detail, give the séance guide a read before experimenting with this type of practice.
4. Tarot Cards: A Popular Divination Tool
Cards are amazing, and the tarot is perhaps my favorite one among all types of divination tools. As you know, I created the Conspiracy Tarot, an amazing deck that I bet you will love. Everybody knows the cards contain answers, and by reading them properly, they will become clear and concise.
The information that comes in a tarot card reading is always different and unique to each person. Although the cards have some positive and negative meanings, when you truly connect with both the Spirit and the cards, you see much more. Oracle card divination is slightly different than Tarot, and the messages flow differently and easily.
You can get really good results by divination through the help of the Tarot, and I believe it is a great place to start for new people to get involved with the magical world. However, If you want to dive deeper into knowledge about the cards, there is this excellent Tarot course which will make you not only very familiar with the tarot cards, but even more you will be able to start helping others with your abilities.
Tarot is one of the popular tools used to divine for spiritual reflection. A tarot deck of cards with images and symbols is used to guide a person towards discovering questions, emotions, decisions, and the paths one may take. It's fine to start without knowing every card's meaning. Just get to know the card, and continue examining the picture. Then think of what appears to you.
If tarot feels like the right starting point for you, you can explore The Conspiracy Tarot deck.
Want to understand tarot readings more deeply? The Tarot Card Reading Course is another useful place to continue your learning.
5. Crystal Balls and Scrying
Let me ask you something: are you able to clear your mind with focus alone? Or, at least, are you able to focus on something specific? If you said "yes" to either question, you certainly don't need a crystal ball. This is without even asking about your gifts, because the crystal ball is just a focal point to concentrate on and to "see" images on it. You are really seeing them in your mind's eye, but for some people it might be easier to "see" them on a surface.
Crystal balls sometimes are polished gemstones such as quartz, tiger's eye, or hematite, and when this is true, you indeed get a big addition by using them. Each crystal has a different purpose, and this purpose will aid you in your explorations.
Crystal balls are classic divination tools used for scrying. Scrying involves focusing your attention on a surface and allowing images, thoughts, or impressions to arise.
The process is less about physically seeing something inside the crystal and more about developing your inner sight. Your attention becomes quiet, allowing your imagination and intuition to work together.
If you want to explore crystals first, have a look at this guide to crystals and their spiritual uses.
You can also learn more about developing inner vision through Third Eye practices.
Ethics and Respect When Using Divination Tools
Using divination tools responsibly is just as important as learning how they work.
It can be tempting to treat a new tool like a toy. But spiritual practices deserve care. Think of it as having a toolbox. You would not pick up every tool without learning what it does first.
The same idea applies here.
Give yourself time to understand each tool. Avoid using readings to control other people or make decisions for them without their consent. Respect your own boundaries and the boundaries of others.
It is also helpful to remember that spiritual guidance is not a substitute for professional medical, financial, or mental health advice when you need it.
How Do You Know Which Divination Tool Is Right for You?
There is no single best divination tool for everyone.
Ask yourself three simple questions:
- What tool am I naturally curious about?
- What kind of guidance am I looking for?
- Am I willing to spend time learning and practicing?
Your answer may change as you grow. That is completely normal.
Some people begin with tarot and later explore runes. Others start with a pendulum and become interested in energy work. Your spiritual path does not need to follow anyone else's timeline.
Wrap Up
Integrating divination tools into daily practice is always a fantastic aid, and you will find your favorite tools when you start connecting with them. It is important to always intend a respectful and ethical approach when using any of these tools. Don't be a small kid playing with a toolbox or a drawer full of kitchen utensils!Â
Â
Allow yourself to grow into your divination tools; they usually have a consciousness and a soul, and you can have a wonderful relationship with them when you start to connect more deeply.
If you are ready to explore tarot, you can start with The Conspiracy Tarot deck or build your skills through the Tarot Card Reading Course.

FAQ
Q: What are the most common divination tools?
A: The most common divination tools are the tarot, the pendulum, and astrological tools such as the Ephemeris.
Q: How do you use a spirit board safely?
A: You need to set up a séance ceremony and build the energy of the group over time. The group leader (a Spirit guide, not a physical member) will indicate when it is a good time, if necessary, to use a spirit board. A séance ceremony is protected physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually, an essential foundation before opening energetic portals.
Q: What is the meaning behind rune casting?
A: You may run casts to seek information, such as with many divination tools. You can also create energy grids.
Q: What are the best tools for scrying?
A: This goes up to you, which one do you connect with? I would suggest a scrying crystal ball or mirror, as well as a pendulum. Explore your options, and seek the one you connect with the strongest.
Q: How do crystal balls help in divination?
A: Take a crystal ball as a focal point. But it acts the same as my post-it exercise, but using a crystal ball instead. If the crystal ball is made of a specific gemstone instead of glass, you will get additional benefits.
Q: What types of tarot cards are available?
A: Generally, most Tarot Card Decks have 78 cards with a Minor Arcana made of 4 suits, plus the Major Arcana. Some Tarot Decks only come with the Major Arcana or are missing it altogether. I have seen some Tarot Decks with six suits or different types of suits, as well as the Major Arcana.
