Body Shaming: Understanding the Spiritual Damage and How to Overcome It
- Post Published: June 25, 2025

Have you ever looked in the mirror and felt unhappy because of something someone said about your appearance? Or maybe you have seen it on social media where people are being judged for their weight, their height, the shape of their body.
We all must be sorry for the fact that body shaming has gradually turned into one part of our lives where it affects people of all ages and backgrounds. The harm from body shaming extends beyond just looks. For example, it can destroy your self-esteem, self-confidence, besides causing emotional pain. It also causes mental illness, and even spiritual health issues.
Fortunately, you can heal it yourselves. Through self-awareness, self-compassion, and relying on the guidance of the right person, you can build a better relationship with yourself and stop being affected by negative comments that are thrown at you.
What is body shaming?
Body shaming is the act of or mocking someone about his/her body, weight, shape, size, or appearance. It can happen through social media, family members, friends, or even from your own thoughts. Body shaming does not just affect emotionally, it also affects confidence, and your self-awareness.Â
What are the body shaming effects?
Some of the most common body shaming effects include:
- Low self-esteem
- Anxiety and depression
- Eating disorders
- Social withdrawal
- Negative body image
- Loss of confidence
- Constant comparison with others
If you see it spiritually, negative words put you down emotionally and make it very hard for you to love yourself again.
How to overcome body shaming
You can come out of this by:
- Minimizing connection with unrealistic beauty standards.
- Replacing negative thinking with positive
- Practicing self-care every day.
- Asking for moral support from people
- Realizing your worth
What Is Body Shaming? And Why It Should Not Exist
Some of you asked me to write about body shaming, and we are going to focus, as always, from a spiritual point of view. This is a very delicate subject, as well as a significant problem. If you are suffering excessively from body shame, please make sure to seek help. You are not alone. Contact Crisis Text Line if you need support. On top, I will be happy to help you add you to my healing list, and support you with some personalized free healing too, so feel free to reach out.
Last week, we talked about Mercury Retrograde and what positives you can get out of it. Keep in mind that in less than a month, it's here again. Talking about body shaming, Mercury retrograde can help you grow stronger by finding your strong and most beautiful points, and learning how to embrace them.
At the stage of evolution that humanity is (for some things), body shaming is an unacceptable behavior that shouldn't even exist anymore, but unfortunately does, and it's a growing problem. I want to take a small approach to the problem from my point of view.
If I think of it, the act of shaming one because of their body (or any other reason) is not only unacceptable but also proves how little the awareness of perpetrator is! If you have been body-shamed in the past, but now you are redeeming yourself, you indeed become aware of how insignificant the looks are.
Seriously, think about it. I want to be blunt as always when I see someone body shaming, I see them like primates (sorry to the primates) who don't know any better and are pointing fingers and laughing over others because they are not "aligned with the stereotype" These people are followers and they can't think for themselves but obey to trends and extremely poor, unimportant, but overvalued social standards.
To approach this topic from a spiritual point of view, and why it is so irrelevant in terms of how insignificant physical bodies are for multidimensional beings that reincarnate, such as humans.
Different Types of Body Shaming
Some common body shaming examples include:
Type | Example |
Weight shaming | Mocking someone for being overweight or too thin |
Appearance shaming | Criticizing skin, scars, hair, or facial features |
Height shaming | Making jokes about someone being too short or too tall |
Fitness shaming | Judging someone for being too muscular or not fit enough |
Age-related shaming | Criticizing natural signs of aging |
In the next section, we'll explore the real body shaming causes and why they have become so common today.
The Real Body Shaming Causes
Here are some major causes that lead towards body shaming.Â
Body Shaming on Social Media
One of the biggest body shaming causes today is body shaming on social media. Every day, people spend a lot of time watching stories, scrolling and unrealistic lifestyles. When they keep watching these consistently, they start thinking that we all must be the same. Then they start comparing themselves with celebrities and influencers and try to have standards like them. This leads to unnecessary stress among people.Â
If you want to adopt a positive lifestyle, go and read our guide on Empathy and Compassion. It clearly shows how being kind can shift your opinions towards other people.
Cultural Beauty Standards
Beauty standards keep changing with time. Every culture has different standards for body shapes, skin tones, and physical features, which shows that beauty is not determined by looks, but by society.Â
When people consistently see these standards, they start judging themselves and other people. Which creates a cycle where body shaming continues from one generation to the next.
Family and Peer Influence
Sometimes the first experience of body shaming happens at home or in school. A parent may make comments about weight. Friends may joke about someone's appearance without realizing the emotional impact. Children who experience body shaming and bullying often carry those painful memories into adulthood.
Words spoken repeatedly can slowly become beliefs. Over time, people may start criticizing themselves even when nobody else is judging them.
From a spiritual point of view, negative words contain energy. The Principle of Mentalism says, what we keep thinking consistently determines our life experience. If you want to go in detail, read our guide on the Principle of Mentalism.
As you can see, body shaming causes are not only social. They can also become emotional habits that affect the way people think about themselves every day.
The Devastating Body Shaming Effects
Take a look at these brief reasons why body shaming can be so destructive:
- Eating disorders: There are deadly eating disorders such as bulimia, binge eating, and anorexia, and these are no joke. Body shaming caused millions of people to contract this mental sickness, ruining their lives and those surrounding them. Are you a bringer of these awful energies? I am sure you are not, so don't allow it!
- Anxiety and depression: These are guaranteed since body shaming will guarantee that the victim will feel trapped in their body. This will also promote sickness and weakness because the victims will be projecting hateful energies onto their bodies, damaging them even more.
- Short-term and long-term damage: From here, we can name several personality disorders, phobias, and even turn to be a hateful and even dangerous individual, especially if there are other mental illnesses aligned.
- Suicide: Unfortunately, there are daily suicides around the world because of horrible body shaming. If you are suffering excessively from body shame, please make sure to seek help. You are not alone. Contact Crisis Text Line if you need support. On top, I will be happy to help you add you to my healing list, and support you with some personalized free healing too, so feel free to reach out.
I am sure this is a terrifying solid list for you to stop any slight thought of body shaming. Stop any projected judgment over someone else that perhaps you don't even know, because this is damaging too. The person might not hear it, but you are projecting negative energy on them and drawing further negativity into their lives because of the Principle of Mentalism and Vibration, so stop it!
Common emotional effects include:
Â
Emotional Effect | How It Can Affect Daily Life |
Low self-esteem | Feeling "not good enough" |
Anxiety | Constant worry about appearance |
Depression | Loss of motivation and happiness |
Social withdrawal | Avoiding friends and public places |
Negative self-talk | Becoming your own harshest critic |
These emotional struggles often continue long after the comments have stopped.
The Spiritual Damage of Body Shaming
Spiritual effects of body shaming are often ignored. When people face criticism consistently, they start to be distant from themselves. Instead of praising themselves for their worth, they start seeing flaws which creates fear and shame. Â
Many spiritual teachers believe that these feelings can affect your personal energy and vibration. The Heart Chakra may also become blocked, making it very hard to accept love from yourself and others.Â
If you want to know in detail how your personal energy influences your emotional well-being, go and read our article on the Principle of Vibration.
How to Overcome Body Shaming: A Healing Guide
Healing takes time, but every step you take helps you build confidence and self-respect. The aim is not to be perfect but to accept yourself the way you are.
Step 1: Manage Body Shaming on Social Media
I am not a fan of social media, and most empaths don't like it either, for a reason. It's full of judgment, hatred, negativity, and cats. Well, the cats are good, of course (a nice time waster too, but this is another story). The rest is a problem, and you need to be above it.
- Minimize social media use
- Search for productivity ideas
- Understand the meaning of "unrealistic."
If you would like more guidance on creating a positive mindset, have a look at our article on Negativity and How to Overcome It.
Step 2: Replace Negative Self-Talk With Positive Affirmations
If free will could be bent, I would force-program this part. I have seen this in countless people, including some of the people I love the most, who are stupid when acting this way. Yes, I am using the word "stupid" to avoid a bigger swear, because this is a way to slowly kill themselves. If you are one, your self-destructive mechanism is making you feel I am exaggerating. You are preparing your body to feel negative and become prone to infections, viral infections, and even cancer.
- The effective way is to shift your focus on your strengths instead of flaws. Every time you want to say something bad about yourself, just divert your mind completely and start thinking positively. If you are stubborn enough to find none, recall what people who love you say.
- Even if you don’t like anything, try to see it in a positive way. Be kind and start loving yourself. Just try to make yourself realize that your body is just a minor aspect, not the most important part.
When you practice these thoughts every day, you start seeing change in yourself very soon.Â
Step 3: Practice Self-Healing and Self-Compassion
You need to start working on yourself when you want to escape the awful feelings of body shaming. Feel free to start applying some of these self-healing techniques; they will make you feel better.
- Talk to trusted friends, family, and mentors. I will be very happy to support you during a "Talk to Fer" session.
- Seek professional help if you feel that body shaming is controlling your life.
- Contact Crisis Text Line if you need support right away because you can't simply cope.
These are powerful steps for you to take. Please remember you are not alone, and there is nothing wrong with you. Each human being is different both on the inside and the outside. You don't come out of an assembly line; no one does.
Step 4: Seek Support From People You Trust
You are not the only one facing body shaming. So, try to speak with the people you trust, family members and therapists who can help you rebuild your confidence. If you feel you need deeper guidance, you may also want to explore Fernando Albert's Transformative Coaching Experience for one-to-one support on your healing journey.
Step 5: Remember That You Are More Than Your Body
One of the most powerful ways to overcome body shaming is to remember that your appearance is only one small part of who you are. Your kindness, compassion, wisdom, talents, and values are what truly define you. Bodies naturally change throughout life, but your soul and your inner light remain constant.
If you would like to explore this spiritual perspective further, take a look at our article on Reincarnation to understand why many traditions teach that the soul is eternal while the body is temporary.
How to Support Someone Experiencing Body Shaming
While I have been asking you to step in for those who suffer body shaming, or even worse, those who provoke it, I haven't shared how, so here it goes:
- Be a supportive friend or parent. You know your friend/kid, and you probably know how to help them, and if you don't, sometimes you can simply offer your help and be willing to listen. You can't imagine how much you can learn when you listen.
- Encouraging positive self-image conversations. You might have to be stubborn on this one; trust me, I know it well. However, persistence yields the desired results. Remind your person how beautiful they are, the way they are, and encourage/remind them to focus on their best traits.
- Addressing body shaming in schools and social groups. If you are extroverted enough and you are up to it, public speaking, local talks, and other events to bring awareness can and will be extremely helpful.
Ultimately, you can follow your feelings. When you want to help your person, you will always find ways. Even if you are supporting them by listening alone, you can't imagine how much you can help someone, even saving their lives. Body shaming is a serious problem, but if we all do our part, we can stop it.
Wrap Up
I hope that today's subject helped you to understand the situation better. If for any reason you have body-shamed someone, you can redeem yourself by, for example, making other body shamers aware that this is entirely wrong. Remember, you are the soul; everybody is the soul. The physical body will sooner or later rot (or burn in fire, up to you) once you, the soul, leave your current vessel/body behind forever.
I will repeat this. This is a very delicate subject, as well as a significant problem. If you are suffering excessively from body shame, please make sure to seek help. You are not alone. Contact Crisis Text Line if you need support. On top of that, I will be happy to help you add you to my healing list and support you with some personalized free healing, too, so feel free to reach out.
Remember, your value has never been defined by your appearance. It has always been defined by the person you are within.
