Five of Cups Card Description and Symbolism
In the classic Rider-Waite Five of Cups symbolism: First, there is a cloaked figure that stands in defeat, staring at three spilled cups on the ground. It is a tough situation if you think about it. The person is not looking ahead or around; instead, they are locked inside what happened, normally trapped in the place of mistakes, and this is terrible. I know this place; in fact, most of us do, and it feels awful.
The Conspiracy Tarot shows a gloomy computer room with rain outside, with a 404 error glowing on screen due to electrical problems from spilled cups. A slumped figure is totally helpless here.
However, the message is to look around and beyond the problem. The computer is still on, representing the opportunity to recover from this (in the same way as the two standing cups in some other Tarot decks) and the possibility of closing the window and picking up the mess. Not everything is lost, but it requires taking action. This is the part many people forget when they first learn the Five of Cups tarot card.
The card does not say everything is gone. It is saying you are not ready to see what remains yet, but in a bit of a harsh way, like jolting you up. If you want like a more historical review, explore Tarot on Wikipedia, but here we are staying with how the card feels when it appears in a real reading.
Five of Cups Upright Meaning
The Five of Cups upright means grief and disappointment with regret, normally focusing so much on what was lost that what remains becomes invisible for a while.
As a grief tarot card, the Five of Cups can appear after a breakup or a failed plan. Other times it can be a missed chance or a painful conversation. Can you relate to this? Sometimes the heart needs to admit, “Yes, this hurt me.” Please acknowledge your pain to start healing it.
This is also a loss tarot card, but the loss is not always physical. You may be mourning a version of someone or of yourself, sometimes perhaps a future you had already imagined. The regret tarot meaning comes in a way I am sure you are familiar with. It comes when you keep replaying what you should have done or why you did not see something sooner.
Still, the card has a path. In some versions, such as The Conspiracy Tarot, all Cups are spilled... but still there are many indicators that there are still hopeful ways for us, starting by having an actual working computer, error or not, but also requiring you to close the window before it gets worse.
Five of Cups Reversed Meaning
The Five of Cups reversed means acceptance and lots of healing, normally including forgiveness (self), and starting to move away from grief toward life again.
This is the point where you finally turn around, even though the pain may still be there, but it does not control everything anymore. This is the Five of Cups reversed acceptance, when you can talk about what happened freely. You will notice you can do it without completely falling apart. Also applies when you start feeling a little more space inside your chest.
As a moving-on tarot message, the reversed Five of Cups says the worst of the emotional stuckness may be lifting, and hey, this is quite relieving. It can be a card of healing from loss in tarot, and this helps you regain your life and desires.
The Five of Cups reversed reconciliation is also a potential to appear. In some situations, this means reconciling with another person and sometimes with yourself. Trust me, that one can be even more important.
Five of Cups in Love and Relationships
Single
The Five of Cups suggests that prior relationship problems are not allowing you to start a new one. You might be comparing every new person to someone who hurt you or to someone you miss. Normally, you will also bring your fears from the prior person into the new one, and no, you are not broken. You are healing from a traumatic event.
In a Relationship
In a relationship, the Five of Cups points to disappointment. Other times, it goes with unmet expectations or sadness about how the connection has changed. It can show a Five of Cups breakup, and this one is tough, trust me, but necessary. It may also show grief inside a relationship that still has something alive. Don't give up; there are still ways to fix it.
Reversed in Love
The Five of Cups reversed love meaning shows emotional recovery through forgiveness. For singles, this may mean you are ready to love without punishing the next person for the last one, and trust me, this one is very big. If you are asking about a Five of Cups ex returning situation, it can happen, but only if the whole spread supports it or other sources of light, such as the Akasha. Do not stop your healing just because someone may or may not return.
Five of Cups in Career and Finance
The Five of Cups career meaning points to a professional disappointment. For others, it's a job loss or missed opportunity with setbacks.
In work, this card can show a Five of Cups job loss. Normally, going through a failed project or a business idea that did not land as you wanted. This is a missed opportunity tarot card, yes, but it also asks you to look at what the experience taught you. You've "at least" gained the experience, so it's not all lost.
For money, the Five of Cups money meaning can show regret over spending as well as a financial loss. You are learning from the setback and taking better steps. This way, you start moving toward stability again.
Five of Cups: Yes or No?
For a Five of Cups yes or no question, upright is usually no. I like to say a type of "no" that says, "Let it be, and better look around." The situation may involve disappointment and sadness, or an outcome that does not feel emotionally satisfying.
Reversed, the answer is maybe, leaning toward yes. I would say, perhaps, something more like, "Yeah, it's coming; keep at it." Healing is happening, but don't forget to continue healing to avoid falling back into old ways.
Five of Cups as Feelings
Five of Cups as feelings means someone feels sadness, regret, disappointment, or grief about the connection or situation.
For the Five of Cups feelings for someone, the person is usually not indifferent. They may feel sad about what happened as well as guilty about their part. A lot of times, they are disappointed that the connection did not become what they hoped. They may miss you but not take action, because it is not the same as grief.
If this is the Five of Cups as how someone sees you, they may see you as hurt and not ready to move forward yet. This is not necessarily judgment. It is an awareness of where your energy is right now, allowing you to take necessary action.
Five of Cups in Different Spread Positions
Past
In the past position, the Five of Cups shows a loss and disappointment, including regret, that still shapes how you receive life today. You may have moved on physically, but not emotionally, at least not a part of you.
Present
In the present, this card says you are in a period of mourning with disappointment and emotional heaviness. Be gentle with yourself and don't allow this pain to control you.
Future
In the future, it can show disappointment coming up. In other situations, it can show an old grief surfacing because it needs healing. Take this like a "snooze alarm" and move through the emotion instead of burying it.
As Advice
Five of Cups as advice is simple: turn around and check. What part of your life still has light? Start there.
As Outcome
Five of Cups as an outcome can show a sad or disappointing result. I'd say this is especially true if the energy is already fragile. Think about it: It contains the seed of healing if you are willing to work with it.
As Timing
Five of Cups timing can point to the time it takes for grief to soften enough for you to see the potential solutions to keep going.

You Should Reflect on the Following Questions
When I created The Conspiracy Tarot (if you want a copy, make sure to use the coupon BLOG111 at checkout), I added questions for each card in the Little White Book. For the Five of Cups Tarot Card, reflect on these:
- What measures do you take in different areas of your life to avoid unexpected and unnecessary accidents?
- What are you trying to do when you have realized that you have made a mistake and have attracted negative consequences?
- From a former difficult situation, do you also recall the positives?
I hope these questions help you bring something that improves your life, even a little bit. When you reflect, you meet with self-discovery, and this makes you stronger.
