After doing thousands of readings, I can tell you that this card shows up when your energy is ready for a step that you, at a physical level, are not. This is a card that connects very much with the confusion that came from the Seven of Cups, as we saw last month. Here, you recognize the illusion, but you need to decide what you need to do with it.

Eight of Cups Card Description and Symbolism

In the Rider-Waite Eight of Cups, you can see a cloaked traveler who is walking away with a staff. The red cloak represents life force and purpose, so it's not like the person is lost; they could be very much aware of what they are doing, and they have made a choice. From here, I want to quote:

Below, eight cups form two careful rows, five and three, leaving a visible gap. Something has been missing although much was already built. Above the figure, the unusual lunar image blends light and shadow, bringing intuition, uncertainty, and the unconscious into the decision. The river marks an emotional crossing, while the mountains promise a harder and more truthful path. You can compare this interpretation with A. E. Waite's original Eight of Cups description.

In the Conspiracy Tarot, you can see a different approach but with a similar message: a person is in deep grief and regret, dwelling within the memories of something that perhaps is no more. The concept of hanging on to something empty that no longer serves a purpose. You can lift up your head here and start to understand the choice you have taken and how you can find healing to take the courage for a decisive and changing step.

Fernando's Tip: Take a moment to think about where your focus is aiming. Are you feeling that everything looks complete, but from within, you feel you aren't? This is a key answer!

Eight of Cups Upright Meaning

The upright Eight of Cups means walking away from something you once valued when you realize that it no longer serves your purpose or deeper feelings.

Perhaps you have invested years into a relationship or a business, perhaps a friend or even a belief system... and now you feel that the truth is harder to deal with. The energy of the Eight of Cups brings heavy disillusionment that will promote a required departure so you don't hold on to empty cups. Remember that you invested your energy, and you still received some important teachings.

I have seen a lot of times this connected with a spiritual awakening. You no longer follow the life you believe is supposed to be correct, but you follow instead, or start to, your emotions, observing how they feel. It is important that you take the lesson and move on to the next step; otherwise, you will feel trapped if you keep dwelling.

Fernando's Tip: Check out what you are holding onto and see what yet you can experience with it. If nothing, you know it is time to move on.

The eight of cups appears upright, inviting reflection on emotional distance and what may need to be left behind.

Eight of Cups Reversed Meaning

The Eight of Cups reversed shows fear of moving away physically while you carry the same emotional link, such as leaving a place, a job, or even a friend or relationship.

You might know deep down that you need to leave, but you find excuses like convenience, loneliness, and not wanting to have to deal with it entirely, to the point of wanting to negate it. However, another version of yourself is already past this chapter, and this can lead to some big problems because taking action (leaving a job, person, etc.) will trigger unprocessed patterns.

Sometimes, it could mean that you perhaps walked away too fast and there is a potential point of return. It could be the time when you need to reconsider, but you can only approach this situation again with complete honesty, starting with yourself. You need to make sure whether you are acting out of love or fear.

Fernando's Tip: Ask whether you are staying out of love or fear. Your body often answers before the mind creates another excuse.

The reversed eight of cups can invite reflection on hesitation, unfinished emotions, or difficulty moving forward.

Eight of Cups: Love and Relationships

When You Are Single

The Eight of Cups for singles in love means leaving old romantic patterns behind. This could be releasing an ex or stopping chasing unavailable people. In other situations, this also relates to understanding what you truly want. A good question to ask yourself is why you keep chasing something that doesn't nourish you.

When You Are in a Relationship

There is the possibility that one partner is getting ready to leave, as in a way, unspoken feelings are starting to show, although this card is not a straight "end of your relationship." For example, one potential here is leaving behind an unhealthy dynamic between yourselves and choosing a more grounded way to approach it. If you share a karmic connection, the lesson may involve knowing when growth requires release.

Eight of Cups Reversed in Love

The Eight of Cups reversed love meaning it normally shows the classic situation in a relationship where either or both are holding it for confirmation or fear, but not for love. A powerful meaning, too, is when someone is ready for reconciliation by really facing what went wrong. This is the reason why honesty is a major cornerstone. Remember, staying where you don't want to only brings you more pain.

Fernando's Tip: Always start by asking yourself whether a potential returning connection will still allow both of you to grow.

In relationships, the eight of cups can reveal an honest crossroads between remaining with the familiar and choosing another direction.

Eight of Cups in Career and Finance

The Eight of Cups career meaning often tells you that it is time to leave work that no longer aligns with you or the path you are taking. It could be quitting a job that is not aligned with your soul and the path you are taking. You are potentially buying purpose and freedom.

When there are finances involved, you should calculate the cost before making a change, but not from a fearful point of view. If you are seeing this in reverse, it could be that you are sticking to a job you greatly dislike for security or because of being trapped. Sometimes, it could be reverting to a previous career because of making a premature departure.

Eight of Cups: Yes or No?

Upright: Normally it's a no because the situation may be ending and the result will not fulfill you anymore. If you are asking questions like "Should I leave?" or "Is it time to move on?" Here, you have a strong yes.

8 of Cups reversed yes or no: Here, the answer depends on what you asked; for example, if it's about leaving, it normally says you are not ready, or there is unfinished work here. If you ask about staying, it can be a conditional yes, needing that everything unfinished be worked on and healed.

Eight of Cups as Feelings and How Someone Sees You

Eight of Cups as Feelings

You may see the person here feel emotionally distant and very tired or disappointed. While the feelings could remain, the faith and foundation of the connection have weakened. You can see the heart is preparing for departure, even if it's something that hasn't come up yet.  When reading this intuitively, your clairsentient perception will reveal if the energy is final, or if it requires some space to heal.

Eight of Cups: How Someone Sees You

The exact Eight of Cups message is that someone sees you as somebody who has outgrown the situation. They will feel resentment or great, and sometimes, even admiration because you are willing to pursue something far deeper.

Eight of Cups as a Person

This represents that the person is seeking transition, and they are not ready to settle for now. The focus here is meaning over comfort, always inspiring others to do the same. If this is unbalanced, they can leave before dealing with the emotions and create unfinished situations.

The eight of cups represents the strength to enter the unknown when an emotional chapter no longer supports growth.

Eight of Cups in Different Spread Positions

Past, Present, and Future

Past: A departure changed the way you are heading. Present: There is a major transition coming up that you are getting ready for. Future: A potential chapter may close soon, so make sure to listen to your inner intuition so you can be prepared.

Eight of Cups as Advice and Outcome

As advice, the general message is to walk away from what is draining your spirit. As an outcome, it could mean that someone is ready to leave, enabling a new path to open up in front of you.

Fernando's Tip: Walking away works best when you know what lesson you need to move forward with.

Eight of Cups Timing

Eight days, weeks, or months may be relevant, but not always. I would say this is more of an episodic departure versus a sudden end of things.

You Should Reflect on the Following Questions

When I created The Conspiracy Tarot (if you want a copy, make sure to use the coupon BLOG111 at checkout), I added questions for each card in the Little White Book. For the Eight of Cups Tarot Card, reflect on these:

  • How much time do you invest in finding the best way to overcome your problems and challenges in life?
  • What do you have in your "bucket list" that you can begin to materialize?
  • What are you holding that no longer serves a purpose?

I hope these questions help you bring something that improves your life, even a little bit. When you reflect, you meet with self-discovery, and this makes you stronger.

Some Things Are Built and Then Left Behind

The Eight of Cups tarot card meaning brings something meaningful here that I want to share: walking away can be the most loyal thing you can do to yourself, or better said, to your soul. You didn't waste what you left; instead, it revealed what you need, and now, you can finally stop pretending.

Next week we will talk about an interesting subject, one perhaps I don't talk about, so it's a good start. The subject is fae, benevolent elemental beings that reside on the elemental sub-planes of existence. Quite interesting, so make sure to stay tuned for next Wednesday!
