Mind and Soul: How do they differ? Let's talk about the mind.

Have you ever wondered if the soul was more in control than the mind? We rarely know who is doing the thinking here, as we are so caught up with our thoughts, plans, and solutions. The mind can lead us through a day in the physical world, while the soul quietly supervises and guides from intuition and increased awareness.

A realization of the difference between mind and soul can completely change your perspective about yourself, your mission, and direction in life. It is when you realize you are not your thoughts but the consciousness behind those thoughts that you really begin a journey to true spiritual knowledge and inner peace.

The Concept of the Interrelation Between the Soul and the Mind

Have you been acknowledging and truly appreciating your successes? Take a minute to really enjoy feeling happy. This week, let’s delve into the mind, a subject that many people misconceive.

Even though the soul is already veiled, it is very important to learn and understand the spiritual connection between the soul and the nature of the intellect. Even though they have different functions, body, mind, and soul are interrelated.

In other words:

  • The body is what we see.
  • The mind is what we believe.
  • The soul is what we are.

All of this increases awareness, which is the beginning of true spiritual self-realization and will allow you to observe your thoughts without identifying with them.

The Principal Distinctions Among Spirit, Ego, and Mind

The whole difference between mind and soul can be observed once we understand that we are not our minds. We use the mind as a tool in this human experience, and behind everything is the eternal soul. Now, let’s break this down clearly:

The body is what we see, the mind is what we believe, but the soul is what we are.

The Mind

  • Operates through thoughts, logic, and reasoning.
  • Connects us to the physical plane.
  • Houses the ego; the identity formed in this lifetime.

The Ego

  • Represents the “I”; our temporary identity and self-image.
  • It is shaped by experiences, fears, and desires.
  • Exists only in this life and fades after death.

The Soul

  • It is eternal and unchanging.
  • Holds our divine consciousness.
  • Continues evolving through lifetimes.

In simpler terms: Mind = Ego + Consciousness

It is due to this balance that we are able to function in the world, but remember that our very basic essence is beyond comprehension.

See The Ego and Consciousness to learn how the ego influences consciousness.

The Temporary Mind and the Eternal Soul

Here’s an easy way to see the contrast between the two:

Our consciousness and ego are temporary layers; they help us navigate earthly existence. But beneath all that, the soul’s eternal nature is untouched.

As the belief in reincarnation would have it, wisdom is carried along from life to life by our souls, but both mind and identity get reset. For a longer look, see our piece entitled The Soul’s Journey Through Reincarnation; it provides a tranquil perspective on the cycle of rebirth.

What Remains After Death and What Fades Away

When the physical body ceases, we shed what is temporary: the mind, ego, and even personality. What continues is the soul, untouched and everlasting.

We detach from:

  • The body, which returns to the earth.
  • The mind, which dissolves with the physical self.
  • The ego, which belonged to this life alone.

We keep:

  • The soul, our true identity.
  • The eternal consciousness, which is divine.

This allows us to perceive death as a metamorphosis, not an end, and thus to meet death with equanimity. It is the psychosomatic connection through which temporary existence translates into eternal evolution.

Experiencing Pure Soul Awareness Through Astral Travel

By passing beyond the intelligence, you are able to perceive your real spiritual self rather than your physical self. This, through intense meditation or astral projection, enables awareness to be outside of the body. During an astral projection, the ego is gone, and the soul experiences Oneness; the oneness of the universe and the collective consciousness.

You can also learn how to begin this mind-soul split safely and intentionally with our Astral Projection Guide.

You can also learn, if you wish, about the Planes of Existence, each of which represents a different level of consciousness that the soul is capable of exploring beyond the confines of the physical mind.

In death we detach ourselves from what is not eternal like the body and the mind.

A Simple Way to Explain the Mind-Soul Interaction

Let’s keep it simple: Imagine an egg.

  • The shell is the body.
  • The white is the mind.
  • The yolk is the soul.

It is the intellect that binds the soul with the material universe by embracing and filling it with pure, bright, and eternal essence. As one reflects and meditates, the mind and spirit become seen more as allies, rather than adversaries.
